According to the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, the number of osteopathic graduates has increased 50 percent in the last decade, making osteopathic medicine one of the fastest-growing health professions in the country. To meet the growing demand, more than a dozen new osteopathic medical colleges have opened their doors since the mid-1970s. Together, all 26 institutions enrolled more than 18,000 students in 2009, of whom nearly 51 percent were women.
