The U.S. Department of Labor predicts the job growth for all cosmetologists to be much faster than the average through 2018. The rate of growth for the specialty of mortuary cosmetology, however, is dependent on two factors: how well those in the cosmetology industry market their services and the age of the population and number of deaths. Employment growth for mortuary cosmetologists should be about as fast as average in the next decade, but may increase in the decades beyond. According to statistics compiled by the National Funeral Directors Association, the death rate was 8.1 per thousand in the U.S. population in 2008, and is expected to increase to 8.9 deaths per thousand by 2030, and 9.6 per thousand by 2040. As the large baby boomer population ages, all careers that provide services to the elderly population are expected to experience steady growth.
