Employment in book, newspaper, directory, and periodical publishing is expected to decline by 28 percent through 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Despite this prediction, employment for experienced lexicographers should remain relatively stable over the next decade because the field is so small and publishers will still need the services of indexers. Lexicographers are important players in the creation and revision of dictionaries, and although computers have made the work of lexicographers easier, there is little chance that technological advances will replace the need for these workers.
