The field of homeopathy is growing rapidly along with the national interest in alternative health care. The World Health Organization estimates that up to 80 percent of the world's population (about 3 billion people) rely on traditional (alternative) medicine as their primary form of health care. According to a survey published by Health Products Research Inc., physicians who have introduced homeopathic and holistic medicine into their practice said that patient acceptance is greater for these therapies, resulting in better compliance. Sharon Stevenson states that there has been a shortage of trained homeopaths; many established homeopathic practitioners have waiting lists ranging from two months to one year.
