The number of forensic experts employed in the United States is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all careers through 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Population increases, a rising crime rate, and the greater emphasis on scientific methodology in crime investigation have increased the need for trained experts. Forensic experts who are employed by state and local government agencies should experience stronger employment opportunities than those who work for federal agencies, although some government agencies may be under pressure to reduce staff because of budget problems. Forensic experts with at least a four-year degree in forensic science will enjoy the best employment prospects.
