Fashion Photographers

Employment for photographers is expected to grow more slowly than the average for all careers through 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). For photographers specifically working in fashion, employment will likely be dependent on the prosperity of employers involved with the fashion field, such as magazines, newspapers, advertising firms, and fashion houses. The outlook for these agencies currently looks only fair. Competition for jobs will be keen since these positions are highly attractive to people with artistic ability and technical skill. In addition, the Occupational Outlook Handbook notes that the proliferation of digital cameras and computer art programs allows consumers and businesses to produce and access photographic images on their own. Despite this improved technology, the specialized skills of the trained photographer should still be in demand in the fashion world. Individuals who are creative and persistent in finding job leads and who are able to adapt to rapidly changing technologies will be the most successful. The popularity of American fashions around the world should create a demand for photographers who can effectively capture the latest styles. Numerous outlets for fashion, such as online magazines and retail Web sites, will also create a need for photographers.
