The Occupational Outlook Handbook reports that employment for postsecondary teachers in general will grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2018. This is largely because enrollment is expected to increase, creating a greater need for professors. Employment for social scientists is expected to grow much faster than the average for archaeologists and about as fast as the average for historians through 2018. Job growth that is much faster than the average is expected for all biological scientists through 2018, but scientists holding Ph.D.'s may face strong competition when trying to get basic research positions. Employment for medical scientists is expected to grow much faster than the average through 2018.
