Confectionery Industry Workers
The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment for sugar and confectionery product workers will decline through 2020. Most new openings will arise as workers change jobs. Large wholesale confectionery companies will provide the most employment opportunities. Candy making has become increasingly automated. It is often possible to produce candy products from the raw materials to the finished, packaged product without that product having ever been touched by human hands. As more and more confectionery producers use automated machinery and equipment, the need for production workers, especially unskilled workers without some college education, will decrease. In addition, the trend toward company consolidations will likely continue, meaning fewer employers of confectionery workers.
