College Professors

Employment of college professors is projected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Both part-time and full-time postsecondary teachers are included in this projection. However, enrollment growth is anticipated to increase at a rate somewhat slower rate than it has in the past. College enrollment is projected to grow due to an increased number of 18- to 24-year-olds, and from an increased number of adults returning to college. Opportunities for college teachers will be particularly good in private community colleges and for-profit institutions (although enrollments at many of these schools have declined in recent years). Retirement of current faculty members will also provide job openings. However, competition for full-time, tenure-track positions at four-year schools will be very strong.
