Through 2020 employment for civil engineers is expected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Employment will come from the need to maintain and repair public works, such as highways, bridges, and water systems. In addition, as the population grows, so does the need for more transportation and pollution control systems, which creates jobs for those who construct these systems. Innovations in green technologies will also create job opportunities. Firms providing management consulting and computer services may be additional sources of jobs for civil engineers. However, employment is affected by several factors, including decisions made by the government to spend further on renewing and adding to the country's basic infrastructure and the health of the economy in general.
