Facilities Management

This is a top-heavy industry, in which the bulk of the revenue flows to a small number of very large firms, and a very large number of establishments are small operations. Of the more than 10,000 business establishments engaged in this industry in 2007, 80 percent had no paid employees—only a self-employed proprietor—and brought in only 3 percent of the industry's revenue. Of those firms that did have employees, one-third had 5 or fewer. Only 2 percent of the firms had one thousand or more employees, but these 40 firms controlled more than 3,000 establishments and accounted for 71 percent of the business that this industry did in 2007. In computer facilities management services, four companies accounted for 64 percent of receipts in 2007.
