Employment in the consulting industry is expected to be strong during the next decade, although employment outlooks vary by industry. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) predicts that the following industry sectors are expected to add the most new jobs from 2010 to 2020: health care and social assistance, professional and business services, retail trade and wholesale trade, construction, state and local government, leisure and hospitality, educational services, transportation and utilities, and financial activities. On the other hand, there will be fewer consulting jobs in the manufacturing industry, a field that has suffered considerable job losses in recent years. According to the DOL, the professional and business services industry (which includes consulting firms) is the largest and third-fastest growing occupational cluster in the service-providing industry; more than 3.8 million new jobs are expected to be added by 2020.
