The construction industry is one of the largest industries in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, it employed 5.8 million workers in 2012. This is a sharp decline from the previous employment level of 7.2 million people in 2008. There were approximately 884,300 construction companies in the United States in 2008. Roughly 269,700 were building contractors, 57,600 were heavy and civil engineering or highway contractors, and 557,000 were specialty trade contractors.
