Computer Software

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that the computer and technology industry, including the software industry, will experience faster than average employment growth, about 12 percent, through 2024. As of 2014, the computer industry in general employed about 3.9 million workers; by 2024, another 488,500 new jobs are projected to be added to the field. Each job in the software field has a slightly different outlook. Software developers will continue to see a high growth rate, 17 percent, through 2024, primarily due to the increased demand for software for new devices, such as tablet computers and smart phones. Employment of computer systems analysts may rise by 21 percent and that of information and security analysts is projected to grow by 18 percent.
