The largest group of people working in this field are the animators, who use either computer platforms or low-technology methods such as drawing cels or photographing stop-motion frames. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that about 69,000 Americans hold this job. About 40 percent of these workers are self-employed, a very high number. The motion picture and video industry employs about 9,100; about 4,300 work in computer systems design; about 3,700 work for software publishers; and about 2,900 work for firms that do advertising, public relations, and related services. California is the state with the largest number of wage-earning animators; New York and Washington are roughly tied for second place.
