22 Interview Questions the Top Law Firms Ask

by Nicole Weber  |  August 10, 2015

While most of us are looking forward to enjoying the last few weeks of summer as much as possible, life is not so different for rising 2Ls and law firm recruiting teams. On-campus interviews are in full swing at law schools around the country and some students are already preparing for callbacks: second interviews with a law firm that may last anywhere from a couple hours to a full day. To get in the spirit of this crazed season, I took a look at some interview questions that the Top Ten... Read More >

Are Freezing Offices a Form of Sex Discrimination?

by Nicole Weber  |  August 03, 2015

Freezing cold in your office this summer? You aren't alone, especially if you are female. A new study suggests that biological differences between men and women are to blame for the icy thermostat settings in your office. Buildings apparently use a decades-old formula to determine summer temperatures, reports the NY Times. The formula was developed in the 1960s, when most U.S. office-workers were men, and uses the metabolic rate of a 40 year old male as one of its variables. No wonder I... Read More >

In fact, Carlton Fields Jorden Burt has claimed the No. 1 spot in all of the diversity ranking categories except for one-Diversity for Military Veterans-in which Paul Hastings is the winner. Which Law Firm Has the Happiest Associates?

by Nicole Weber  |  July 15, 2015

For the third year in a row, Paul Hastings has been named Vault's Best Law Firm to Work For, a title earned through high ratings in Vault's numerous Quality of Life rankings including Satisfaction, Firm Culture and Compensation. The competition is serious, however-Ropes & Gray is putting up a strong fight to reclaim the No. 1 spot. Ropes topped the Best to Work For list in 2011 and has been No. 2 since then, trailing Paul Hastings by just 0.12 points this year (compared to 0.13 points... Read More >

Not Sorry: The New Women's Mantra

by Nicole Weber  |  July 01, 2015

To apologize, or not to apologize? That is the question that has been running through my mind multiple times a day since I read Sloane Crosley's astute, refreshingly unapologetic op-ed in last week's NY Times. I have been aware of the female tendency to say "sorry" at every turn for several years now, after attending an eye-opening professional development seminar as a law firm associate. Since then I have tried to be mindful about avoiding the S-word in the workplace unless it is truly... Read More >

BigLaw Bonuses: An Excuse to Keep Salaries Flat?

by Nicole Weber  |  June 17, 2015

Law firms may have been much more generous with associate bonuses for 2014 than in recent years. But is increased discretionary compensation just a way to avoid raising base salaries, which have been the same for 8 years? If you ask the more cynical law firm associates, that is certainly the case. Especially if they live in NYC. Here's what one associate told us: "The higher bonuses this year were wonderful. I'm very pleased that our firm and its peers are rewarding their associates' hard... Read More >

Why ‘Cultural Fit’ Hiring Is Detrimental to Law Firm Diversity

by Nicole Weber  |  June 08, 2015

Last week my colleague Derek Loosvelt aptly discussed the dangers of "cultural fit" hiring, drawing on some examples from Vault's surveys of banking and consulting professionals as they relate to Lauren Rivera's opinion piece in last week's NY Times. When I read Rivera's article, based on the findings of her extensive research on the hiring practices of banks, consulting firms and law firms, I was struck by how alive her conclusions were in the words of the associates who took Vault's law... by Nicole Weber  |  June 03, 2015

What does a day in the life of an M&A lawyer look like? What classes should an aspiring bankruptcy attorney enroll in? What does "clean tech" law really mean? Unfortunately, a traditional law school curriculum doesn't do much to help students figure out what it's really like to practice in different areas of the law. That's where Practice Perspectives: Vault's Guide to Legal Practice Areas comes in, offering budding lawyers insight into the myriad of choices they face as their careers... Read More >
