Europe: Vault Law 50 UK
How does Vault come up with its ranking of the Top 50 Law Firms
in the UK? The first step is to compile a list of the most renowned
law firms in the country; this year, our list included 120 law
firms selected because of their prominence in the legal industry
and their interest to students and graduates.
We asked these law firms to distribute an anonymous, online
survey to all qualified lawyers (excluding partners) in their UK
offices; firms were also asked to distribute a separate survey to
trainee solicitors. Between November 2010 and February 2011, we
received nearly 1,900 survey responses from lawyers and trainees at
50 law firms.
Qualified lawyers were asked to rate each of the other 119
invited law firms on a scale of 1 to 10 based on prestige. Lawyers
were not permitted to rate their own firm and were instructed to
ignore any firm with which they were unfamiliar. We collected all
the survey responses from qualified lawyers and averaged the
prestige score for each firm. The firms were then ranked in order,
starting with the highest average prestige score as No. 1 and
continuing on down to determine the Vault Law 50.
Remember that Vault's Top 50 UK Law Firms are chosen by
practising solicitors at top firms. Vault does not choose or
influence the rankings. The rankings do not assess firms by
turnover, profits, size, lifestyle, number of deals or quality of
service; they measure perceived prestige, based on the opinions of
currently practising lawyers at peer firms.
Ed. note: Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP and Clyde & Co
LLP merged in November 2011, with the combined firm now known as
Clyde & Co. The Vault survey was conducted prior to the merger,
and all rankings refer to the pre-merger firms.
