Energizing the Sunflower State
Headquartered in Topeka, Kan., Westar Energy is a Fortune 1000
company and the largest electric energy provider in Kansas,
employing about 2,400 people and serving nearly 700,000 customers
in east and east-central Kansas. Westar's energy centers generate
more than 7,000 megawatts of electricity, and the firm operates and
coordinates 35,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines.
Westar is the leader in renewable energy in Kansas and has helped
propel Kansas to be a national leader in green energy. The firm
harvests energy from the wind, sun and landfill gas.
In an effort to create innovative environmental solutions,
Westar's engineers have developed methods to reduce emissions at
its coal-fired plants, and the firm's environmental experts have
developed and installed a first-of-its-kind wetland to treat
scrubber wastewater using the wetland's natural, sustainable
process to reduce all pollutants to required levels.
In addition, through strategic community partnerships, Westar
helps energy consumers learn about the processes and technologies
behind the infrastructure. The firm constructed Education Station,
a one-of-a-kind working substation, at Topeka Public Schools' Kanza
Education and Science Park to explain the flow of electricity from
generation to end user. It also partners with local school
districts, non-profit organizations, and government agencies on
solar projects that benefit Kansas organizations and help prepare
the state for solar energy.
