About Dimension Data Holdings plc

Large and in charge

Founded in 1983, Dimension Data Holdings has come a long way since its humble beginnings.  Today, it is South Africa's largest information technology company.  Dimension Data also boasts a significant international reach, with outposts in 47 countries on six continents.  In the United States, the South African company has 15 offices, with headquarters in Hauppauge, N.Y.  Dimension Data's global presence is bolstered by its three subsidiaries, Singapore-based Datacraft; Merchants, headquartered in the United Kingdom; and Internet Solutions, South Africa's largest ISP.

Dimension Data helps clients design, build and maintain their IT infrastructures.  Services fall into three main areas: professional services, which include consulting and technology integration; managed services, which involve support and monitoring; and IT procurement.  The firm's solutions run the gamut from network integration and security to operating environment and messaging.  Dimension Data serves a number of industries, with a focus on financial services, government, health care and manufacturing.

South Africa and beyond

With a vision of "wanting to do great things," three young, ambitious South African men left their salaried jobs to start their own business, the Dimension Data that we know today.  The company's first decade was marked by strong domestic growth as Dimension Data made a formidable reputation as an industry leader in network technology.  From 1995 to 1997, Dimension Data set its sights outside the African continent and focused on expanding in the Asia Pacific region.  This resulted in numerous acquisitions made by Dimension Data such as: Internet Solutions, U.K.-based Merchant Group and Australia-based companies, Datacraft Limited and Com Tech.  From 1998 to 2000, Dimension Data pursued an aggressive global strategy by expanding into the northern hemisphere.  The company secured a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange, and additional key acquisitions were made that ensured its foothold in new markets in the United Kingdom, North America and Europe.

From 2001 to 2008, Dimension Data relied on its diversity and resources to withstand the IT industry slump of the new millennium.  The company's fiscal reports over the years indicated a strong, sustainable upward trend in growth and profits as it continues to acquire more companies namely: Planet CTI SA, a leading computer telephony integration company based in Brussels, Belgium; Matrix Networking Group and Premier Systems Integrators, two leading network integration companies based in Charlotte, N.C.  Dimension Data exceeded $2 billion in revenue in 2003.

In September 2004, Dimension Data announced a black economic empowerment (BEE) deal which was hailed as one of the most profound in the sector.  The transaction included black investors taking a 25 percent stake in Dimension Data.  The consortium, composed of Ngcaba Holdings, Safika Holdings and various empowerment groups and staff, was given full voting rights and the ability to appoint three directors to the board.  The BEE partners are locked in until 2009.  As for the firm's latest income statement, Dimension Data tallied revenue of $3.95 billion in 2009, a noticeable decline from the previous year's $4.61 billion.  However, the company's net income increased in 2009 when it generated $134.6 million compared to $120.9 million in the previous year.  One of the company's latest awards came in 2010 when it fulfilled all the necessary requirements and program prerequisites to sell, deploy and support Cisco networking solutions worldwide.  In relation to this, Dimension Data received a Gold Certification from Cisco.
