The company formed by CEO Rick Hendrick is a major force in NASCAR Sprint Cup auto racing, with four teams competing for the checkered flag. Its top drivers include Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne, and Jimmie Johnson. The company handles marketing and licensing for its racing teams, in addition to providing cars designed and built at its 100-acre complex. Hendrick Motorsports also builds and re-builds some 550 engines. Founder Rick Hendrick, who also owns car dealership Hendrick Automotive Group, started Hendrick Motorsports with veteran driver Harry Hyde in 1984.
Hendrick Motorsports made history during the 2009 racing season when driver Jimmie Johnson won his fourth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup championship. Teammate Jeff Gordon also has four NASCAR titles to his credit, but those championships were earned between 1995 and 2001.
