Multiband Corporation has a nearly singular purpose: providing installation services for satellite and cable service companies and system operators. Serving as a fulfillment arm for DIRECTV, handling nearly 20% of all those single-family home installations accounts for most of sales. Multiband also provides broadband services for multi-dwelling units (MDUs) such as apartment complexes and hospitality facilities; and it offers public digital signage services, and engineering and construction services for telecom companies. Multiband is the largest national MDU system operator for DIRECTV, covering the contiguous US except Montana and Wyoming. Its home service is mostly east of the Mississippi River.
Its reach in the DIRECTV home service west of the Mississippi River entails Iowa, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. Multiband's DIRECTV fulfillment role falls under the company's field services segment (about 90% of sales). In that role Multiband does not have any direct competitors, but is susceptible to DIRECTV's ability to compete against other video programming providers. Multiband's field services business provides similar services to other cable and internet providers, as well as commercial clients. Internet providers it serves include AT&T, HughesNet, and WildBlue. It provides commercial services to customers only in a few states: Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas. Multiband owns and manages more than 115,000 subscribers, and supports more than 80,000 additional users.
Typically, as Multiband's field services segment goes, so goes total revenues. Overall sales for 2011 essentially reflected the 12% increase in field services revenues. No surprises as to what drove it: primarily a 5% uptick in DIRECTV business.
In 2012 Multiband moved to strenghten that business by announcing it would acquire New Jersey-based MDU Communications for more than $40 million. The purchase will bring in another 75,000 subscribers. Later that year it expanded into the cable television fulfillment business, when it bought certain assets from broadband technology services company Groupware International.
