About the Company

Dick Stack was just eighteen years old when he had the first bright ideas for what would become Dick’s Sporting Goods. In 1948, Stack was working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York, and suggested to his boss to include fishing tackle in their product offerings. The owner was hardly receptive, and Stack decided to quit and pursue his vision of a sports and outdoors store that offered a wider array of products, a one-stop shop for all things sport. In search of comfort and advice, Dick Stack turned to his grandmother, who turned out to be the company’s first investor—he gave her grandson $300 to start his business.
