Radio One ranks #1 among African-American audiences. The largest radio broadcaster serving black listeners, the company owns more than 50 stations in about 15 markets. Its radio stations, which mostly operate in market clusters, offer a variety of music formats, as well as news and talk shows. In addition to broadcasting, Radio One has a 53% stake in Reach Media, which produces the syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show. Radio One operates several websites and the company also owns more than 50% of TV One, a cable television venture with Comcast. Founder and chairperson Catherine Hughes and her son, president and CEO Alfred Liggins, together control more than 90% of the company.
Radio One rolled CCI into its publishing and online operations segment (Interactive One) that accounts for about 5% of sales. Interactive One now includes branded websites such as NewsOne, TheUrbanDaily, HelloBeautiful, BlackPlanet, MiGente, and Asian Avenue.
Radio One continues to have its eye on diversification outside of radio broadcasting. The company jumped on the social media bandwagon when it acquired Community Connect for about $40 million in 2008.
