Subsidiaries of this company come between brands and the general public. The Interpublic Group of Companies is one of the world's largest advertising and marketing services conglomerates, operating through offices in more than 100 countries. Its flagship creative agencies include McCann Worldgroup, DraftFCB, and Lowe & Partners, while such firms as Campbell-Ewald, Deutsch, and Hill, Holliday are leaders in the US advertising business. Interpublic also offers direct marketing, media services, and public relations through such agencies as Initiative and Weber Shandwick. Its largest clients include General Motors, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, and Unilever.
As with most global companies in the advertising industry, Interpublic experienced a lower demand for its products and services amid the recession. After years of seeing its revenues and profits steadily increase, during 2009 both these numbers dipped by 13% and around 50%, respectively. It attributed this decrease to spending declines and lost accounts within the technology and telecommunications sectors, two of the largest it serves. It also lost businesses within the auto, transportation, and financial services sectors -- three industries hit the hardest during the economic downturn. During this time, Interpublic focused on meeting the needs of its existing clients and optimizing its cost structure. As the economy finally got back on its feet in 2010, Interpublic returned to its profitable ways with revenues spiking and net income rising significantly.
Over the years Interpublic's growth strategy has involved acquisitions and acquiring controlling stakes in emerging markets. In 2010 Interpublic gained ground in the largest country in South America when it acquired CUBOCC, a creative advertising strategy firm well-versed in all forms of digital media. Based in Brazil, CUBOCC works with multinational clients such as Unilever. A few months later, Interpublic snatched up London-based marketing agency Delaney Lund Knox Warren & Partners (DLKW) for $40 million in cash. Interpublic combined DLKW with Lowe London, a unit owned by its Lowe & Partners subsidiary. The combined operations were rebranded as DLKW Lowe and will serve as a major hub agency for Lowe's advertising and marketing network. All in all, Interpublic made five acquisitions throughout 2010.
In early 2012 Interpublic improved its position in the important European market when it obtained Nicole Weber Communications (NWC), a consumer lifestyle agency with offices in Hamburg and Munich. NWC will become part of the GolinHarris network.
