Zotos wants its products to be the hair and now to salon clients worldwide. Zotos International, a unit of Shiseido International Corporation and Japan's Shiseido Company Limited, makes hair care and hair color products and markets them to salons. The company owns more than 80 brands, including JOICO, Blondie, Quantum, Bain de Terre, Nucleic-A, Naturelle, and Zotos, that are manufactured in a green plant in Geneva, New York. The firm also sells Decléor, CARITA, and Qi esthetic beauty and spa treatments. Products are sold through professional beauty supply stores and salons -- such as Armstrong McCall, Regis Corporation, and Sally Beauty -- as well as through online retailers.
Zotos has maintained growth through the economic downturn, thanks to aggressive marketing. The salon products market has grown increasingly competitive in recent years, with several big salon suppliers, such as Regis and Sally Beauty vying for market share. While it sells its products worldwide, the beauty company concentrates its efforts on North America. To this end, Zotos has logged steady sales increases in recent years among its overseas and domestic professional divisions.
Shiseido acquired Zotos in 1988 from Conair Corporation. Zotos, under Shiseido's umbrella, has enjoyed deeper pockets for its research and development. Being part of the Shiseido organization has softened the impact of a down economy on Zotos. For Shiseido, its purchase of Zotos gives it a foothold in the beauty salon niche.
