Home is where Newell Brands (formerly Newell Rubbermaid) is. The go-to company for men, women, and children makes housewares (Rubbermaid plastic products, Calphalon cookware), juvenile products (Graco), hair products (Goody), and office items (DYMO and Sharpie). Newell Brands sells its items to mass retailers (Target) and home and office supply stores (Staples). As a result of a more than $18 billion acquisition of consumer products giant Jarden in mid-2016, Newell Brands also inherited popular products such as Bicycle Playing Cards, Mr. Coffee, Coleman, Jostens, Oster, Rawlings, Sunbeam, and Yankee Candle.

Operations

Newell Brands operates its business through several segments: Branded Consumables, Outdoor Solutions, Writing, Consumer Solutions, Home Solutions, Baby and Parenting, Commercial Products, and Process Solutions.

Branded Consumables is its largest segment and manufactures, markets, and distributes a broad line of branded consumer products. Outdoor Solutions offers global consumer active lifestyle products for outdoor and outdoor-related activities.

The Writing segment makes writing instruments for use in business and at home. It markets its products directly to mass merchants, warehouse clubs, grocery/drug stores, office superstores, office supply stores, contract stationers, and travel retail and other retailers.

Consumer Solutions provides a diverse line of household products, including kitchen appliances and home environment products. It primarily sells its products under the Crock-Pot, FoodSaver, Holmes, Oster, Rainbow, and Sunbeam names.

Home Solutions makes and distributes tubs, bins, containers, and other storage tools under multiple brand names. Its indoor/outdoor organization items and food and home storage products are primarily sold under the Rubbermaid, Roughneck, and TakeAlongs names.

Baby and Parenting makes infant and juvenile products such as swings, highchairs, car seats, strollers, and play yards sold under the Graco, Baby Jogger, Aprica, and Teutonia names.

Commercial Products offers cleaning and refuse products, hygiene systems, and material handling equipment. Process Solutions offers a wide variety of plastic products including closures, contact lens packaging, medical disposables, plastic cutlery, and rigid packaging.

Geographic Reach

Newell Brands operates in nearly 100 countries in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia Pacific region. More than 70% of the company's business comes from the US, while Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region generates about 15% of sales. Latin America and the Asia Pacific regions split nearly 10% of revenue, while Canada brings in the remainder of total sales.

Sales and Marketing

The office products maker sells its products in almost 200 countries through large mass merchandisers, such as discount stores, home centers, warehouse clubs, office superstores, commercial distributors, and e-commerce companies.

Newell Brands relies on the largest retailer in the world to help peddle its products. Sales to Wal-Mart and its subsidiaries generate about 10% to 15% of its net sales each year.

Financial Performance

Newell Brands enjoyed explosive growth in 2016 due to its acquisition of consumer products giant Jarden. Revenues more than doubled from $5.9 billion in 2015 to $13.3 billion in 2016 as a result of that acquisition, volume growth, pricing, and its 2015 purchase of Elmer's Brands.

All this growth led to a 10% increase in Writing segment sales and an 8% bump in Baby and Parenting sales. These factors also fueled additional sales stemming from its newly created segments of Branded Consumables, Consumer Solutions, Outdoor Solutions, and Process Solutions.

In conjunction with the higher sales, net income surged by more than 50% from $350 million in 2015 to $528 million in 2016. In addition, Newell Brands' operating cash flow skyrocketed from $566 million in 2015 to $1.8 billion in 2016 due to its Jarden acquisition.

Strategy

During 2016, Newell Brands launched its New Growth Game Plan, an initiative to simplify its organization and develop resources to invest in growth initiatives to build a bigger, faster-growing, and more global company. The plan involves making strategic cuts to dispose of under-performing brands and business lines. Adhering to this strategy, in early 2017 it sold its Tools business to Stanley Black & Decker for nearly $2 billion. Brands involved in the sale included Irwin, Lenox, and Hilmor.

Mergers and Acquisitions

The company has been pursuing large strategic acquisitions to expand its product lines and significantly add to its revenue stream.

In a sweeping move for the consumer goods industry, Newell Brands purchased Jarden in a total transaction valued at $18.7 billion in mid-2016. The mega-deal gave the company access to popular brands such as Sunbeam and Oster appliances, Coleman outdoor gear, First Alert home safety products, Ball canning jars, Loew-Cornell art supplies, K2 snowboards, and Bee and Bicycle brand playing cards. It estimates that the combined company will eventually earn $16 billion in revenue.

In 2016, Newell Brands acquired New Zealand-based Sistema Plastics, a leading provider of innovative food storage containers, primarily under the Sistema brand, for $460 million. The transaction broadened the company's international footprint of food and beverage categories and strengthened its core category of home fragrance in the US.

Newell Brands made another large deal in 2015 through the $1.5 billion acquisition of Visant Holding Corp. (Visant), the parent company of Jostens. A partner to schools and students nationwide, Josten has a product portfolio that includes yearbooks, class and championship rings for students and professional athletes, caps and gowns, diplomas, and varsity jackets. Post acquisition, Jostens became a part of Newell Brands' Outdoor Solutions segment.

Newell Brands inherited more famous brands in late 2015, when it purchased Elmer's Brands for $600 million. Through the purchase, the company inherited popular brands Elmer's, Krazy Glue, and X-Acto and significantly enhanced its Writing segment.
