Its roots were in print journalism, but the Tribune Media Company (formerly known as Tribune Company) has evolved to embrace virtually every aspect of modern media. Tribune Media currently owns 42 TV stations in more than 30 markets, cable network WGN America, and a 31% stake in the Food Network. In addition, Tribune Media owns a number of online media properties, Tribune Studios, Tribune Digital Ventures, WGN-Radio, and a significant number of iconic real estate properties and strategic investments. In 2014 Tribune Company spun off its cornerstone newspaper publishing business into a newly formed company called Tribune Publishing (later renamed tronc) and changed the name of the TV, radio, and digital business to Tribune Media.

Tribune Broadcasting's 42 owned or operated local television stations reach approximately 50 million households. Cable network WGN America reaches approximately 80 million households.

The company's digital network services operate through Antenna TV and through the operation and distribution of THIS TV, both of which are digital networks that air in households nationally.

Tribune Studios is a development and production studio. The company's radio program services include WGN-AM, a Chicago radio station.

Tribune Media Company spent $42 million on advertising in fiscal 2016, compared to $39 million and $43 million in fiscal 2015 and 2014, respectively.

Financial Performance

Tribune Media Company's revenue has been consistent in recent fiscal years. The company reported revenue of $1.95 billion for fiscal 2016, after reporting $2 billion in revenue for fiscal 2015 and $1.95 billion in revenue for fiscal 2014. The consistency is impressive considering the struggles of advertising and traditional media companies in the modern economy.

Tribune Media Company reported net income of $220 million in fiscal 2016. That was an improvement compared to the $262 million net loss the company suffered in the previous fiscal year.

The swing from a net loss to a profit led to the company ending fiscal 2016 with $284 million in cash from operations after ending fiscal 2015 with only about $25 million.

Strategy

In 2017 Tribune Media Company sold off its stake in job listing website CareerBuilder. The company has tried to focus on its most profitable lines of business. The advertising marketplace has become increasingly fragmented. Competition for audience share and advertising revenue is fierce.Tribune Media Company split off its newspaper business to prop up its bottom line.
