About The Detroit News Inc

Gannett spreads the news all over the USA and UK through digital, mobile, and print products. The publishing company operates the national newspaper USA TODAY along with nearly 110 local media organizations in about 35 states and Guam. Gannett also operates more than 160 local news brands online in the UK. The company claims its digital properties attract 110 million unique visitors per month. Its US newspapers claim a weekday audience of about 6 million readers. Gannett was formed in 2015 through a spin-off transaction which separated its publishing and broadcasting operations.

Gannett has two operating segments: Publishing and ReachLocal. Its Publishing segment is the company's largest segment. It accounts for more than 95% of Gannett’s revenue. The segment is comprised of the USA Today Network and Newsquest. Its revenue is generated from print, digital advertising, and circulation.

Gannett's ReachLocal segment accounts for about 5% of the company's revenue. ReachLocal's focus is on local businesses looking for a single, unified solution to their marketing needs.

Geographic Reach

Gannett's newspapers cover world news but are distributed mainly in the US and UK. Newsquest operates in more than 80 locations across the UK. ReachLocal operates in more than 20 locations in 15 states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. ReachLocal also has 30 international offices locations in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and Singapore.

Sales and Marketing

USA TODAY is especially popular with business travelers and other Americans staying in hotels. Its marketing and advertising are geared towards business people. Gannett uses print media, online, mobile, tablet , and niche publications to promote its products and services.

Financial Performance

Gannett's revenue was more than $3 billion in fiscal 2016. That was an increase compared to the $2.8 billion in revenue the company reported for fiscal 2015. The main difference was the $110 million in revenue ReachLocal provided during fiscal 2016 following its acquisition by Gannett.

Gannett's net income decreased from $146 million in fiscal 2016 down to $52 million in fiscal 2016. The decrease in net income was partly caused by expenses associated with the ReachLocal acquisition. The acquisition also played a part in the company ending fiscal 2016 with $165 million in cash from operations after finishing out fiscal 2015 with $231 million.

Gannett is focused on local news that could be of national interest. USA TODAY has a truly national following, and it is considered one of the few national newspapers. However, the paper is not as highly regarded as the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal . The company has been trying to expand its digital capabilities to capitalize on current trends in digital media, social media, and digital advertising.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In 2016 Gannett acquired ReachLocal. The addition of ReachLocal's digital marketing services and solutions increased Gannett’s overall digital revenues by roughly 50%. As a result of the deal, Gannett expects its digital revenues will approach $1 billion in fiscal 2017.
