No need to go all the way down to the well for your oil and gas info. PennWell publishes more than 130 print and online magazines and newsletters, including business-to-business titles Oil & Gas Journal, Dental Economics, and Hydro Review. It also conducts 60 conferences and events; publishes websites, books, maps, and directories; and offers research and database services. While its core industry remains oil and gas, PennWell also covers electronics, fire services, aerospace and defense, technology, and dental. The firm was founded as the Petroleum Publishing Company in 1910 when P.C. Boyle purchased The Oil Investor's Journal (later renamed Oil & Gas Journal).

Geographic Reach

PennWell has been headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma, since its founding. The company maintains additional US offices in (Nashua) New Hampshire, (Houston) Texas, (San Diego and Mountain View) California, and (Fairlawn) New Jersey. Internationally, PennWell has offices in London, Moscow, and Hong Kong.

Sales and Marketing

While PennWell is not a household name, the publisher's titles are well-known among the business sectors it covers. Through its global events, PennWell reaches more than 135,000 petroleum professionals across 75 countries. This extended reach is unique in the international petroleum market.

Mergers and Acquisitions

PennWell uses cash on hand to regularly acquire complementary businesses. In 2013 the company purchased TransmissionHub, GenerationHub, and their related subscription and data businesses from Colorado's Energy Central. The company, which serves those who build, own, operate, regulate, or invest in North America's electric power infrastructure, will boost PennWell's information and mapping business and expand on its 2011 acquisition of Texas-based mapping products developer eMarket Software.

PennWell has also grown its emergency medical holdings with new magazines, conferences, and online businesses. In 2012 it purchased Elsevier Public Safety Group, publisher of the JEMS (Journal of Emergency Medical Services), the EMS Today Conference & Exposition, and FireRescue magazine, among other media assets. The purchase built upon PennWell's 2010 acquisition of Fire Apparatus & Emergency Equipment magazine and the website FireMagazine.com.

Company Background

PennWell celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010. To commemorate the milestone, it published a book called the 100 years of Business Information Excellence. The company can trace its lineage through four leaders. Current PennWell CEO Robert Biolchini is the son-in-law of P.C. Lauinger, who ran the company for nearly 60 years until his death in 1988. Lauinger's father-in-law, Frank T. Lauinger, was the previous head, who took control from founder P.C. Boyd.

The company changed its name from Petroleum Publishing Company to PennWell in 1990 to reflect its growth beyond petroleum brands.
