PENGUIN GROUP (USA) LLC

Its not-so-random acts of publishing have transformed Penguin Random House into one of the world's largest book publishers. The company operates its own imprint and some 250 others. Its top-sellers include Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, and its stable of authors includes Elmore Leonard, Toni Morrison, and Dr. Seuss. In addition, the company publishes Fodor's popular travel books, audio products, and electronic books. Outside the US, Random House Penguin oversees dozens of publishers as well such as McClelland & Stewart (Canada) and Plaza & Janés (Spain). The current company formed in 2013 when Random House completed its merger with The Penguin Group.

Change in Company Type

Random House merged with Penguin, a unit of publishing giant Pearson, in order to create the largest consumer book publisher in the world. Bertelsmann now controls 53% of the combined entity, and Pearson 47%.

Geographic Reach

Penguin Random House has operations in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and India. The company also includes Penguin’s trade publishing activity in Asia and South Africa; DK Worldwide; and Random House’s companies in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, and Chile.

Operations

Penguin Random House now includes the global adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction print and digital trade book publishing businesses of Penguin and Random House.

Sales and Marketing

Penguin Random House’s biggest new release in recent years was Dan Brown’s “Inferno,”. That book sold almost six million copies in seven months. Other big sellers included Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In," and “The Fault In Our Stars” by John Green.

Financial Performance

Consolidated revenue of $3.65 billion (€2.7 billion) for the combined company includes a full year of Random House, including Germany’s Verlagsgruppe Random House, and a half-year of the Penguin Group. The combined company's total sales in fiscal 2013 were almost 25% more than Random House’s previous year’s revenue of $2.84 billion (€2.1 billion).

Strategy

Like the rest of the publishing world, the company has been focusing on the digital front to offset the declining sales of physical books. It has been selling entire books to consumers directly online, placing it in competition with other book retailers.

Penguin Random House focuses on quality and quantity. It publishes more than 15,000 new titles annually and its publishing lists includes some 70 Nobel Prize laureates and hundreds of the world’s most popular authors.
