Every major city needs a good newspaper rivalry, and Herald Media provides the competitor for Beantown. Herald Media, through Boston Herald Inc., publishes the Boston Herald, a tabloid-sized daily paper that competes with The Boston Globe (owned by The New York Times Company). The company's Herald Interactive subsidiary operates online classified ad sites Carfind, Homefind, and Jobfind, as well as the online edition of the newspaper. In addition, Herald Media produces specialty publications such as high school sports paper Hot Shots, coupon shopper Reader Rewards, and Women's Business Boston. Herald Media was formed by president and publisher Patrick Purcell 1994.
Purcell was named executive chairman of Ottaway Newspapers (later called Dow Jones Local Media Group) in 2008. A publisher of about 10 daily papers in the Northeast and on the West Coast, Ottaway had been acquired along with Dow Jones by media giant News Corporation in 2007. Purcell plans to continue as publisher of Boston Herald.
