The publishing company operates the national newspaper USA TODAY along with more than 90 local media organizations in 33 states and Guam. Gannett also operates more than 160 local news brands online in the UK. The company claims its digital properties attract 95 million unique visitors per month. Its US newspapers claim a daily audience of about 9 million readers. Gannett was formed in 2015 through a spin-off transaction which separated its publishing and broadcasting operations. In 2016 Gannett offered to pay $815 million to acquire Tribune Publishing, including its Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times newspapers.

If the proposed deal to acquire Tribune Publishing gets done, Gannett would add two very well-known and iconic newspapers to its portfolio.
