Cygnus Business Media offers a constellation of industry
publications, web content, and events. The company has
publishing, event, interactive, and marketing operations focused on
specific industry groups: Agriculture, Construction, Public
Safety, Technology, and Transportation. These groups publish
about 40 trade publications (such as Airport
Business, CPA Practice Advisor, Firehouse, Locksmith Ledger
International, Printing News, Food Logistics, and Law
Enforcement Product News), and they produce more than
15 trade shows and events annually (EMS World Expo,
Enforcement Expo, and Officer World Expo). They also operate
some 30 websites (Asphalt.com and MyPrintResource.com). Cygnus
was founded in 1996.
Cygnus in 2009 reorganized and emerged under Chapter 11
bankruptcy protection. The recession took its toll on the
company; it missed loan payments earlier in the year, and it
also folded its Electrical Contracting Products and
Frozen Food Age publications that year. As a result,
Cygnus cut costs by instituting layoffs and freezing salaries. The
dire situation eventually caused the troubled company to file for
bankruptcy in order to slash its debt.
Cygnus operates through five offices in Alpharetta, Georgia;
Arlington Heights, Illinois; Burnsville, Minnesota; Fort Atkinson,
Wisconsin; and Melville, New York.
Cygnus has websites, publications, and events devoted to five
industry groups: Agriculture, Construction, Public Safety,
Technology, and Transportation. In early 2013 it began searching
for a buyer for its Agriculture Group.
Through these groups, Cygnus reaches more than 1.5 million print
subscribers, and nearly 1 million industry professionals through
its marketing services group and expositions. It attracts 2 million
visitors to its network of websites each month.
In order to stay profitable, Cygnus has worked to divest
underperforming publications and product groups in the wake of its
emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009. In early 2013 it
announced it was selling its Agriculture Group, which publishes two
publications (including FEED&GRAIN magazine) and produces five
tradeshows (the Case IH Farm Forum). Cygnus is selling the group to
improve its balance sheet.
Previously, in 2010 the company sold three manufacturing
properties to their managers. It sold Fabricating &
Metalworking to Alliance Communications, an entity formed by
publisher Tony Morrison. It sold Industrial Machinery
Digest and the Total Industrial Plant Solutions
advertising brand to Source360 Media LLC, which is
led by publisher William Strickland. It made the sales to focus on
its core markets of agriculture, aviation, construction, and
