Those disgruntled cavemen and that anthropomorphic gecko just can't seem to catch a break in today's society. Responsible for those ubiquitous GEICO ads, The Martin Agency is a leading full-service advertising firm with offices in Richmond, Virginia, and in New York. Part of global advertising conglomerate Interpublic Group, the agency offers creative development and campaign management services for both national and regional advertisers, along with media planning and strategic consulting. It offers services for interactive marketing efforts and direct marketing campaigns. Martin also has a consultancy division which provides corporate communications and media relations services.
Martin is known for its strong creative work, especially its popular TV spots featuring the GEICO gecko, celebrity spokespeople translating, cartoon commercials featuring Elmer Fudd, and the sophisticated but irascible cavemen. It was also responsible for UPS' "What can Brown do for you?" campaign. As with most players in the industry, Martin experienced cutbacks on the amount of money its clients spent on advertising during the recession. As a result, it trimmed 5% of its workforce in 2009. It bounced back later that year by landing travel services giant Expedia as a client. Throughout 2010, Martin added big names like Morgan Stanley, Kraft, and Tylenol to its brand portfolio.
Founded by David Martin in 1965, the agency debuted the "Virginia is for Lovers" campaign for that state's tourism bureau in 1972. It was acquired by Scali McCabe Sloves in 1988. Interpublic's Lowe Group acquired Scali McCabe Sloves in 1993.
