FTI Consulting, Inc. Company Profile

Thriving as a global consultancy

FTI Consulting has grown from a small forensic consulting firm founded in Annapolis, Maryland in 1982, into a global business advisory firm dedicated to helping organizations protect and enhance enterprise value in an increasingly complex legal, regulatory and economic environment. The firm was founded as an alternative to the Big Four-back then, the Big Six-but over time, with the turmoil in world markets, the advent of Sarbanes Oxley and the emphasis on transparency and objectivity, FTI Consulting has had a great impact on world affairs in a variety of different capacities. With more than 4,000 employees located in 24 countries, FTI Consulting professionals work closely with clients to anticipate, illuminate and overcome complex business challenges in areas such as investigations, litigation, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory issues, reputation management, strategic communications and restructuring.

A bull in a herd of bears

As the most recent economic bubble began showing signs of weakness in 2007, FTI Consulting's counter-cyclical business offerings began surging, with the company taking advantage of opportunities to leverage its expertise in practice areas that are in high demand as a result of the economic downturn. FTI Consulting advised on many of the largest, highest profile corporate restructurings during this time, including Lehman Brothers, General Motors and CIT.

Other headline engagements for FTI Consulting include the Bernard Madoff fraud, the O.J. Simpson trial, the Milosevic war crimes trials, the Major League Baseball steroid investigation, the 2000 presidential election recount, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and the Enron, WorldCom and Adelphia Communications bankruptcies.

Snapping up the leftovers

Diversifying through acquisition is nothing new for FTI Consulting. In fact, the company's whole focus on restructuring began with the buyout of two financial consulting firms in 1998, prior to which the firm had specialized in litigation consulting. Since going public, FTI has focused on diversifying the firm's business portfolio by adding pro-cyclical businesses. Today 60 percent of the firm's business is traditional pro-cyclical or based on past pro-cyclical events. This diversification allows FTI Consulting to outperform peers irrespective of the business cycle.

Global Partnerships

FTI Consulting has established partnerships with global leaders in multiple fields. These include the World Economic Forum, of which the firm is a member; a number of its senior and regional leaders participate in the Forum's regular meetings and gatherings around the world, participating in several projects related to anti-corruption, energy and professional services principles.

Additionally, FTI Consulting supports significant global private equity conferences including the likes of SuperReturn International in Berlin, SuperReturn China in Beijing, SuperReturn Asia in Hong Kong, and the Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst Conference in New York City. The company is also a corporate supporter of Chatham House, a policy institute focused on independent analysis, informed debate and influential ideas in international affairs.
