Consider whether or not you like the people you would be working with, and whether they are similar, interesting people.

Uppers

The people and the quality of the work

Downers

Volatility of hours

Comments

You will learn a lot in a very short time and you will gain a lot of skills but be prepared for unpredictable work/life balance strains, i.e. it is not going to be a predictable 50-60hr week on long term projects

If you have a strong math/science/engineering background and you're looking for a taste of the strategy consulting field but aren't really looking to make a career out of it, Dean is a good place for you.

Work itself is of extremely high caliber. Analysts gain significant responsibility very quickly.

Downers

The firm is passive and stagnant (no growth) with zero incentives to stay longer than two years. Work-life balance is awful and management is uptight.

Comments

If you want to have fun and love your job, go elsewhere. If you want to learn as much as possible and gain a lot of responsibility very quickly (and gain valuable skill set), Dean is for you. Dean has no name brand, but the caliber of work is very high, and analysts generally have good exit opportunities.

Uppers

I've been able to build a strong analytical background and have received significant responsibility early in my Dean & Company career. I'm able to easily choose and request projects to be on, which allows me to work in the industries where I have a strong interest. With my low frequency of travel, I've been able to enjoy all of the benefits associated with living in D.C.

Downers

Long hours relative to my non-consultant roommates has proven to be challenging.

Comments

Make sure that you enjoy problem solving and being able to deal with complex problems where you have imperfect information.
