Downers

The volatile and sometimes very long hours

Advice to Candidates

It's a very friendly and bright group of people. They make the very long nights more bearable. It's very volatile work hours and it can be really exhausting at times.

Advice to Candidates

Don't be put off by the hours.

The brilliant and friendly coworkers will allow you to tackle challenging and intellectually stimulating problems.

4.6 of 5 stars

Midlevel in Economic | 2018 | VERIFIED EMPLOYEE

Uppers

Interesting and challenging work, great colleagues, supportive culture, good opportunities for career growth, great work life balance for the pay we receive (most similarly paying jobs require more hours of work)

Downers

Sometimes there can be unpredictable spikes in the hours, sometimes there can be lulls of somewhat boring tasks, client demands and deadlines can be stressful

Advice to Candidates

If you like working with data and quantitative problems, Bates White is a great place for you. The work is mostly backward looking at things that happened in the past (since it is litigation focused). If you want to work on forward looking projects, other types of consulting may be better for you.

The best thing about the firm is the people who work here. From management all the way down to the most junior staff, people here are smart, care deeply about the work we do, and are focused on investing a lot of time and effort into training employees

Downers

The worst thing is the hour volatility, which is probably true of almost every firm in the industry. In litigation consulting, the hours can often be unexpectedly long, which can make personal life planning a challenge. Bates White does the best job possible at managing expectations, but there are still times when you can get to the office planning to leave at 5 or 6pm and end up in the office until midnight or later.

Advice to Candidates

Talk to as many employees as you can to try to get a holistic view of the experience and the industry. Econ consulting is a fairly niche industry, and it is important that candidates thoroughly understand what we do, as it is very different from management consulting or finance.

Many of my colleagues are cool people. The hours are (typically) not too bad. The work is fairly interesting.

Downers

If you live in Virginia, the Metro is a real pain for getting into work.

Advice to Candidates

Ideally you should be interested in economics or law if you want to work at BW. Almost all of the work is litigation-oriented, so keep that in mind if applying.

Rigorous analysis with unparalleled firm culture

4.7 of 5 stars

Midlevel in Economic | Washington, DC | 2018 | VERIFIED EMPLOYEE

Uppers

The people are smart, friendly, and supportive, and the work is interesting and challenging.

Downers

Though manageable overall, the hours can be unpredictable.

Advice to Candidates

Bates White is the firm for you if you want to do interesting and challenging work with intelligent and driven people. You should be willing to invest a lot in your work, including occasionally working long hours. You will learn a lot and be rewarded with skills and connections that will easily transfer to diverse practice areas and applications.
