About Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor LLP

The second-largest law firm in Delaware, Young Conaway's status as a leading bankruptcy and corporate counseling and litigation firm transcends its small state and draws clients local, national and international from corporations, state governments, stockholders and individuals.

A Start in Delaware

Young Conaway was founded in 1959 by Hy Young, H. James Conaway Jr., Bruce M. Stargatt and William F. Taylor. Over the next half-century, the firm grew in size and reputation. Young Conaway is home to the largest Bankruptcy and Employment Law practices in the state of Delaware and is home to 36 Best Lawyers in America 2013. The firm was ranked one of the top 25 law firms in country by mid-level associates in American Lawyer, and in a 2009 survey, summer associates ranked the firm in the top spot in Delaware. Chambers 2012 singles out eight of the firm's practice areas for recognition: Bankruptcy & Corporate Restructuring, Business Planning, Transactions & Restructuring, Commercial Litigation, Corporate Counseling & Litigation, Employment Law, Intellectual Property Litigation, Tax/Trusts & Estates & Benefits.

Bankruptcy Brokers

Young Conaway's bankruptcy practice is not only the largest in Delaware, but it is also the firm's most highly regarded. The state media refers to the firm's lawyers as "Delaware's bankruptcy experts" and The Daily Deal 2012 ranked Young Conaway one of the Top 10 Bankruptcy Firms. Young Conaway has handled bankruptcy and corporate restructuring matters for an extensive client list that includes Continental Airlines, Eddie Bauer, Fannie Mae, KB Toys, the Institute for Cancer Prevention, Polaroid and Planet Hollywood. Young Conaway negotiated Eastman Kodak's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and subsequent $525 million sale of its digital imaging patent portfolio rights to Intellectual Ventures and twelve other licensees which were rounded up by RPX Corp. Offshore but still in-country, Young Conaway guided Hawaiian energy company Big Island Carbon LLC's, which was planning to create a biofuel from macadamia nuts, through a Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Delaware Donors

Young Conaway has received both firm and individual awards from the Delaware State Bar Association for Distinguished Leadership in Pro Bono Service and won the Caleb R. Layton III Service Award of the U.S. District Court for its service to the District of Delaware court. The firm also doles out its own awards, the William F. Taylor Associate Award and the H. James Conaway, Jr. Partner Award, to recognize partners and associates who exemplify pro bono commitment. The winners of these awards choose charities to receive donations from the firm. Young Conaway runs a contribution program where each of its attorneys donate to the Combined Campaign for Justice, a program that funds three low-income legal service providers in the state: Delaware Volunteer Legal Services, Legal Services Corporation of Delaware and the Community Legal Aid Society.

State Supreme Court Movers

Young Conaway has been prominently involved in several influential Delaware Supreme Court cases, including Time Inc.'s acquisition of Warner Communications Inc. which created Time/Warner in Paramount Communications, Inc. v. Time Incorporated (1989), Paramount Communications Inc. v. QVC Network Inc. (1994) and Omnicare Inc. v. NCS Healthcare Inc. (2003)
