Founded in 1876 in Winston, NC as Watson & Glenn, the firm
operated from a single office in Winston Salem for more than a
century. B.S. Womble joined the firm in 1907 and in 1923 Irving E.
Carlyle joined the firm after a short stint as the basketball and
baseball coach of Wake Forest. In the 1980s Womble Carlyle
began expanding outside Winston-Salem, establishing an office in
Raleigh in 1982 and Charlotte in 1984. By the end of the 1990s,
Womble Carlyle had opened its Atlanta, Research Triangle Park,
Washington DC, and Greenville, South Carolina offices. The
