About Troutman Sanders LLP

Troutman Sanders was founded at the tail end of the 1800s in Atlanta. But the firm has grown beyond its Georgia peach roots-over 600 Troutman attorneys practice in 16 offices across the United States and China.

Y'all Are Getting Big

Atlanta-based Troutman Sanders has come a long way since it was founded in 1897 by Walter Colquitt, a sole practitioner. In the intervening 100+ years, the firm has grown primarily through mergers, which have given it a worldwide footprint. Colquitt first expanded the firm in 1930 by welcoming on board, among others, two brothers with the surname Troutman. Over 40 years later, the firm merged with the firm of former Georgia governor Carl Sanders, whose name has been part of the firm's moniker ever since. A merger with Mays & Valentine in 2001 added 150 attorneys and gave the firm a strong presence in the Virginia market. Four years later, the firm expanded again, opening its New York office with around 90 attorneys from the now-defunct Jenkins & Gilchrist Parker Chapin LLP. Then, the firm merged in 2009 with Ross Dixon & Bell, which added to Troutman's lineup offices in Chicago, Orange County and San Diego. The firm opened its newest office in San Francisco, CA in April 2015.

Law Meets Consulting

Troutman Sanders has five core practices-Business Law, Finance, Litigation, Energy & Industry Regulation and Real Estate-under which it boasts dozens of practice groups in nearly every conceivable category. While the firm counsels on the regulars-intellectual property, labor and employment, trust and estates, M&A, etc.-it also has expertise in less common areas like maritime law, hotels, resorts and golf, multifamily housing, and nuclear regulation.

Like many large firms with presences in DC and big-time clients, Troutman has a "government relations" arm. Troutman Sanders Strategies is a stand-alone firm that assists the clients of its law firm sibling with consulting and lobbying services on issues including agriculture, energy and environment, insurance and healthcare, appropriations and project funding, telecommunications and technology, and transportation and infrastructure. Troutman Sanders Strategies has offices in four cities: Atlanta, Washington, Raleigh and Richmond.

Global Pro Bono

Around the world, Troutman's pro bono programs take numerous forms. Part of a larger global initiative, the Operation Smile China Medical Mission was established in Hong Kong in 1991 to repair childhood facial deformities-such as cleft palates-and fund medical programs. The firm's Hong Kong office has been instrumental in helping set up Operation Smile's Chinese non-profit branch. Meanwhile, in New York, Troutman lawyers serve as court-appointed advocates for low or no-income adult tenants facing eviction from their New York City apartments. Other pro bono work includes assisting with Holocaust reparation cases, providing free estate planning, counseling on death penalty cases, and working on Project KIND, which assists children of immigrants who need assistance in the immigration system.

Nothing Beats the Original

Atlanta attorneys John Bowler, Mike Hobbs, Lindsay Mitchell Henner and Puja Patel Lea were featured in an extensive Daily Report article for their representation of Roswell artist Zheng Li in a copyright infringement lawsuit involving his original oil painting, Piano #9. In 2012, Li was visiting an Atlanta Z Gallerie store when he found paintings titled Piano Coloratura for sale that were virtual copies of his work. Subsequent investigation confirmed that Piano Coloratura was being sold across the country via websites and galleries. With the help of Troutman Sanders' quartet, Li sued more than a dozen galleries and stores that were selling the knockoff. Last week, a federal jury awarded Li $885,174, finding that the 2004 copyright for his painting had been infringed. "The similarities [between the two paintings] were so striking that two artists could not independently create two works that looked this much the same," John said. "That's how close they were." Mike, who said the imitation work was supposedly created in a factory, added that to this day, the trial team is still "a little confused" about how the knockoff work was created and when.

California Dreamin'

Troutman Sanders' announcement of the firm's new San Francisco office received significant press. The new office officially opened April 1 in the Financial District at 580 California Street, where the firm has leased the entire eleventh floor. San Francisco will become the 16th office for the firm, and the fourth on the West Coast. "We've always had a plan for being a full California practice," Troutman Sanders Chairman Bob Webb said in the Daily Journal article, "and Northern California is part of that plan and San Francisco is the key business center in Northern California."

Save the Music

Atlanta partner Mike Hobbs has received significant press coverage over the past week for his role in representing San Francisco-based record label and music distribution company Empire Distribution Inc. in a declaratory lawsuit filed by Twentieth Century Fox regarding trademark infringement claims made against Fox's Empire television series. The media reported Mike's statement that, "We are confident that this is a textbook trademark infringement case. … Empire was started over five years before the first broadcast of the show, the marks are identical, and they sell the same products to the same customers. The significant number of incidents of actual public confusion is disturbing." Mike is working with Atlanta partner John Bowler and Orange County partner Paul Gale on the case.

"We are pleased to be recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation."

Innovating for the Future

Troutman Sanders' eMerge team won the Innovation Award for Best Law Firm Solution for its custom development work at Relativity Fest held in Chicago. Relativity is the leading software platform for eDiscovery-used by 99 of the AM Law 100 law firms and hundreds of vendors. In its first year, the annual Relativity Fest Innovation Awards were designed by kCura, the developers of Relativity, "to showcase the best solutions created by [Relativity] customers …  recogniz[ing] groups who have created workflows, applications, and integrations that streamline their internal processes, increase productivity, and positively impact business strategy." eMerge's innovation improves visualization and reporting of the eDiscovery process to help clients understand value. The development team was led by Chris Haley-eMerge's Director of Technology- and Ji Lin, one of eMerge's custom developers. eMerge is led by managing director and Atlanta partner Alison Grounds.

Pro Bono Pro

Washington partner Sharie Brown and Troutman Sanders received a Distinguished Pro Bono Service Award from the Minority Media & Telecom Council for their contributions to the communications industries. Sharie was singled out for providing pro bono assistance to MMTC in critical managerial and operations matters, including employment law, nonprofit compliance, financial and operational controls, nonprofit best practices and board governance matters. She, along with Atlanta partner Ashley Hager, consulted with MMTC, providing support to the group on specialized areas of the law.
