Troutman Sanders LLP

Troutman Sanders was founded at the tail end of the 1800s in Atlanta. But the firm has grown beyond its Georgia peach roots-over 600 Troutman attorneys practice in 16 offices across the United States and China.

Y'all Are Getting Big

Atlanta-based Troutman Sanders has come a long way since it was founded in 1897 by Walter Colquitt, a sole practitioner. In the intervening 100+ years, the firm has grown primarily through mergers, which have given it a worldwide footprint. Colquitt first expanded the firm in 1930 by welcoming on board, among others, two brothers with the surname Troutman. Over 40 years later, the firm merged with the firm of former Georgia governor Carl Sanders, whose name has been part of the firm's moniker ever since. A merger with Mays & Valentine in 2001 added 150 attorneys and gave the firm a strong presence in the Virginia market. Four years later, the firm expanded again, opening its New York office with around 90 attorneys from the now-defunct Jenkins & Gilchrist Parker Chapin LLP. Then, the firm merged in 2009 with Ross Dixon & Bell, which added to Troutman's lineup offices in Chicago, Orange County and San Diego. Now, the firm has 16 offices worldwide.

Law Meets Consulting

Troutman Sanders has five core practices-Business Law, Finance, Litigation, Energy & Industry Regulation and Real Estate-under which it boasts dozens of practice groups in nearly every conceivable category. While the firm counsels on the regulars-intellectual property, labor and employment, trust and estates, M&A, etc.-it also has expertise in less common areas like maritime law, hotels, resorts and golf, multifamily housing, and nuclear regulation.

Like many large firms with presences in DC and big-time clients, Troutman has a "government relations" arm. Troutman Sanders Strategies is a stand-alone firm that assists the clients of its law firm sibling with consulting and lobbying services on issues including agriculture, energy and environment, insurance and healthcare, appropriations and project funding, telecommunications and technology, and transportation and infrastructure. Troutman Sanders Strategies has offices in four cities: Atlanta, Washington, Raleigh and Richmond.

Global Pro Bono

Around the world, Troutman's pro bono programs take numerous forms. Part of a larger global initiative, the Operation Smile China Medical Mission was established in Hong Kong in 1991 to repair childhood facial deformities-such as cleft palates-and fund medical programs. The firm's Hong Kong office has been instrumental in helping set up Operation Smile's Chinese non-profit branch. Meanwhile, in New York, Troutman lawyers serve as court-appointed advocates for low or no-income adult tenants facing eviction from their New York City apartments. Other pro bono work includes assisting with Holocaust reparation cases, providing free estate planning, counseling on death penalty cases, and working on Project KIND, which assists children of immigrants who need assistance in the immigration system.

IN THE NEWS

March 2013

Thank You for Your Service
Troutman Sanders was honored by the American Bar Association's Business Law Section with a 2013 National Public Service Award in recognition of the firm's ongoing contribution to providing pro bono business legal services to low-income individuals and non-profit organizations. "Troutman Sanders exemplifies the characteristics the ABA Business Law Section seeks to recognize in awarding its National Public Service Award … includ[ing] a deep and sustained commitment to business law pro bono across the law firm, highlighted by singular achievements; enduring client relationships; collaborative partnerships; and innovative, needle moving signature projects," said Peter Carson, chair of the National Public Service Award selection committee for the ABA. Troutman Sanders was nominated for the award based on the firm's extensive, ongoing work with numerous pro bono clients including Kids In Need of Defense (KIND), the Women's Economic Development Agency, Goodwill Industries of Central Virginia, and the Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta.

December 2012

Google It
Troutman Sanders was mentioned on several Internet newsfeeds (Am Law Daily, Bloomberg, Law360, The Deal, MarketWatch, Targeted News Service, dpa-AFX International ProFeed and 9to5Google) for its involvement with ARRIS acquiring Motorola Home Business for $2.3 billion in cash and stock. ARRIS Group, Inc., a global innovator in broadband media technology, and Google Inc. jointly announced in December that ARRIS and Motorola Mobility, a Google subsidiary, were entering into a definitive agreement under which ARRIS will acquire the Motorola Home business from Motorola Mobility. The acquisition will be on a cash-free, debt-free basis and is expected to be significantly accretive to ARRIS' Non-GAAP earnings starting in the first full year after closing. Multiple attorneys from the firm's Atlanta, New York, Raleigh and Washington offices assisted on the deal.

November-December 2012

Diverse Rainmakers
Troutman Sanders' Regulatory Compliance and Government Litigation practice group leader and Richmond partner Ashley Taylor was profiled in the November/December 2012 Minority Corporate Counsel Association's Diversity & The Bar newsletter in a section titled "Banking on Rainmakers." In that section, which profiles attorneys selected by leading firms nationwide and who have maintained a book of business of $2 million or more, Taylor's first six months at the firm were discussed as well as what contributed to his success early in his career. "[During those first few months] I began building a practice in earnest," said Taylor. "When you serve your clients as a Sherpa during difficult times, they tend to stay with you over the long haul."

July 2012

Taking Back Discovery
In a special section of the Daily Report-The Art of Managing Litigation-Atlanta partner Alison Grounds was featured and had her photograph appear in an article titled "Bringing tech in house." The article, about law firms catching up "with the times" by handling more data and e-discovery on their own rather than hiring third-party vendors to do the job for them, touted Grounds' recent tapping to head Troutman Sanders' eMerge, a new wholly owned subsidiary created to manage the firm's electronic discovery and litigation management entirely in-house. "We just basically wanted to take that back," said Grounds, adding that the firm used to rely on vendors to assist in cases involving copious amounts of electronic discovery. Additionally, the article noted that Grounds "recently was appointed to a state task force to examine recent court decisions on e-discovery and how to prevent growing technology costs from overwhelming the legal system."

Bring on Beijing
The firm officially opened an office in Beijing, marking Troutman Sanders' third office to open in China since it entered the country in 1997 with the opening of a Hong Kong office. The new office drew widespread coverage in the The Asian Lawyer, Asian Legal Business, the Daily Report, the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Virginia Business magazine, The National Law Journal and on various web sites. The Beijing office opening is significant in that it makes the firm one of only 20 other members of the prestigious Am Law 100 with locations in the cities of Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Additionally, Troutman Sanders continues to hold the distinction of being the only Atlanta-based law firm with offices in mainland China.
