Tonkon Torp LLP

The reach of Oregon-based firm Tonkon Torp extends far beyond its home state. Tonkon Torp has represented some of the largest and most influential companies in the world, including Portland General Electric, sneaker giant Nike and real estate mammoth Blackstone.

Once an Oregonian, Always an Oregonian

Though its reach extends beyond, Tonkon Torp's roots remain in Oregon. In 1974, Moe Tonkon's three-person firm welcomed some new additions: Frederick Torp and five other attorneys from Stoel Rives. Among the original crew of founding partners was renowned Oregonian Brian G. Booth, who is credited with revitalizing the literary and natural heritages of the state. A fervent literary arts advocate, Booth created the Oregon Book Awards, Oregon Literary Fellowships and Literary Arts organizations, co-founded the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission and was the first chairman of the Oregon Parks Commission. Booth and Nike founder Phil Knight attended the University of Oregon together, which led to a longstanding professional relationship between Nike and Tonkon Torp; the firm represented the company for 20 years.

Sponsoring Students

As part of its diversity initiatives, Tonkon Torp awards a fellowship to a 1L member of a racial or ethnic minority group, and it provides a subsequent academic scholarship if the recipient decides to return to the firm after his/her second year of law school. Tonkon Torp also offers the Moe M. Tonkon and Frederick Torp Scholarship to a student selected by the dean of Lewis and Clark Law School, Moe Tonkon's alma mater, who possesses "exceptional aptitude for the law and professional promise."

M&A Gurus

Tonkon Torp bagged one of the most high-profile cases in the aftermath of the market crash. The firm counseled Blackstone Real Estate Advisors, the largest real estate private equity company in the world, throughout its $1.2 billion acquisition of 146 senior living properties formerly owned by the now bankrupt Sunwest Management, formerly the largest senior living private company. The deal was closely watched as it came on the heels of a 2009 Securities and Exchange Commission suit against several law firms in the Pacific Northwest and against Sunwest, which was suspected of harboring a Ponzi scheme to redirect $300 million of investor dollars into repaying previous lenders for losses incurred by the company's retirement properties.

Green in the Evergreens

Being constantly surrounded by evergreen trees and fresh air truly does a lawyer good, and the firm's eco-consciousness extends beyond its Sustainability Committee. Tonkon Torp is home to a well-regarded specialty Energy Practice Group, which has been at the forefront of noteworthy environmental initiatives on the west coast. Tonkon Torp helped timber company Stimson Lumber to sell 25,000 of its formerly owned acres in the famous Redwood forests to the State of California for $60 million. The money was well-spent; the acres are now protected state park land. The firm also negotiated an energy project known as Maricopa Sun, which will help various solar energy companies to develop more than 4,800 acres land in California's San Joaquin Valley and create 700 watts of solar power for 300,000 homes in the area.
