About Thompson & Knight LLP

Alive and kicking since the late nineteenth century, Dallas-based Thompson & Knight has evolved from a Texas oil and gas law firm into an international practice with locations and associated offices in Europe, Africa, and Latin America.

BigTex Beginnings

The firm's founders, William Thompson and R.E.L. Knight, were among the first graduates of The University of Texas Law School, and established the firm in Dallas in 1887. While the firm is still best known for its experience and accomplishments in the energy arena, its specialties have grown to include such areas as tax, finance, litigation, and corporate bankruptcy. The BigTex firm has handled matters in all of the large Texas cities, including Dallas, Houston, and Austin, but its reach extends far beyond the Southwest into New York, California, Mexico, Paris, Algiers, and London.

In addition to energy, Thompson & Knight's bankruptcy practice is particularly strong, having represented creditors in the bankruptcies of many of the biggest fallen giants, including Enron, WorldCom, and Adelphia. Some of its other major clients have included BNSF Railway Company, EnCap Investments L.P., Johnson & Johnson, Dow Chemical Co., and Lockheed Martin.

Geology Rocks

Energy, the crown jewel in Thompson & Knight's practice, remains its core strength. Thompson & Knight was named the "Law Firm of the Year" in Oil & Gas Law in the 2011-2013, 2015, and 2017 editions of "Best Law Firms" published by U.S. News-Best Lawyers®. The firm has represented large multinational oil companies and state-run conglomerations in almost every aspect of the energy industry. The firm's foreign offices have been instrumental in assisting clients with oil and gas deals overseas and negotiating with foreign governments. In related environmental arenas, Thompson & Knight has defended railway companies against multiple lawsuits alleging toxic contamination, works drilling and leasing issues for oil and gas companies, and has handled a variety of other cases for chemical plants and pipeline companies. Thompson & Knight was also one of the first firms to launch a climate change practice, dedicated to steering clients through global warming regulations.

Leading Lady

In 2012 the firm named Emily Parker, one of the country's most respected tax lawyers, as its first female managing partner. Parker spent her entire career at Thompson & Knight, save a two year stint at the IRS, and was actually the first female attorney hired by the firm in the 1970s. Mark Sloan succeeded Emily as Managing Partner in 2016. His nearly 20 year career at Thompson & Knight began as a Summer Associate in 1989. During his time at Thompson & Knight, he has served as an Associate and Partner in and Practice Leader of the Firm's Real Estate and Banking Practice Group. He also has served as a member of the Firm's Management Committee. Emily Parker has resumed full-time her nationally renowned tax controversy practice.  The firm is far more diverse than it was some 40 odd years ago: it was one of only two Texas-based law firms to be ranked in the 2014 "50 Best Law Firms for Women" by Working Mother and Flex-Time Lawyers and has ranked as a Top 100 Law Firm for Diversity, Top 100 Law Firm for Women, Top 25 Law Firm for Hispanics, and Top 25 Law Firm for Native Americans by MultiCultural Law magazine.
