The same Midwest city that brought us the Indians, Dennis Kucinich and John D. Rockefeller also produced one of BigLaw's most well-traveled firms: Squire Sanders. With proprietary offices in more than a dozen nations and a growing network of relationships from Beirut to Santiago, the firm founded in Cleveland over 100 years ago is now one of the largest firms worldwide.

One Firm

Founded in 1890 as Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, the firm is now a true global heavyweight. Squire Sanders boasts offices in 19 countries and a client roster that includes the likes of 3M Company, Barclays PLC, Bayer Corporation, DuPont, GE, The Boeing Company, United States Steel Corporation, and, in keeping with its Cleveland roots, LeBron James.

Organized around a "one-firm firm" structure that enhances connection among its far-flung branches, Squire Sanders ramped up its globalization efforts in the 1990s by targeting Eastern Europe and the former Soviet states as they experienced varying measures of post-Cold War economic growth. In 1998, the firm made its first move into Asia with a Hong Kong outpost, to be followed by offices in Beijing and Tokyo in 2000 and Shanghai in 2004. More recently, the firm's 2011 combination with leading UK law firm Hammonds LLP added nearly 500 lawyers across new offices in Berlin, Birmingham, Leeds, Madrid, Manchester and Paris, and expanded its already existing presence in Brussels and London. In 2012, the firm kept the ball rolling by opening shop in Singapore, Seoul and Sydney.

Global Presence

Through its international reach, Squire Sanders has robust international trade, banking and finance, and energy practices. The firm has advised on such matters as trade barriers and regulatory issues in Kazakhstan, export controls for large multinational companies, and CFIUS and defense security service approvals. It represented the lead agent in connection with a US$150 million multicurrency, cross-border syndicated secured credit facility for an industrial component manufacturer. And it's represented both U.S. and internationally-based energy companies in the negotiation and development of facilities from Louisiana to India.

While it's well-known for its global perspective, Squire Sanders gets a lot done in the U.S. too. On Capitol Hill, it's the muscle behind Squire Sanders Public Advocacy, a wholly owned lobbying shop that represents U.S. and international clients before federal agencies and Congress. Squire Sanders' financial services group also actively represents U.S.-based and multinational investment banks, commercial banks, private equity firms and hedge funds.
