About Dentons

Following its March 2013 mega-combination between established global firm Dentons, European stronghold Salans LLP and Canadian firm Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (FMC), Dentons became the seventh largest law firm in the world, a leviathan of approximately 2,600 attorneys and staff that spans 79 locations across 52 countries in the U.S. and Canada, the U.K., Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Taking Over the World-One Firm at a Time

Borne of a history of combinations, Dentons is the Pac Man of law firms.  SNR Denton was created in 2010 when U.S. big shot Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal and UK bastion Denton Wilde Sapte decided to join forces. Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal was founded in Chicago in 1906 and established a reputation as king of Windy City real estate, buying and selling shopping centers, hotels, offices, and other real estate investments. The firm expanded throughout the twentieth century domestically and hopped over to Europe, opening offices in Brussels and Zurich. Along the way, Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal acquired clients such as Sony Corporation, Prudential Insurance Company of America, Allstate Insurance Company and Citigroup. In 2009, it offered a home to nearly 100 lawyers from dissolved Big Apple firm Thacher Proffitt & Wood. Meanwhile, Denton Wilde Sapte was a leader in energy, real estate and retail, financial institutions, transport and infrastructure, technology, media and telecommunications. Dentons drew upon the strengths of its constituent firms, offering strong practices in energy, transportation and infrastructure, financial institutions, government, health and life sciences, insurance, manufacturing, real estate, and technology and telecommunications and carving out additional expertise in IP and insurance litigations.

But one combination in the new millennium wasn't enough. SNR Denton then set its sights on Europe and Canada in its quest for global domination, courting Salans Hertzfeld & Heilbronn and FMC. Salans, which was established in Paris in 1978, had firm footing in much of the European Union from Bratislava to Istanbul, but had also expanded in 1999 to New York. FMC, the sixth-largest Canadian firm prior to the combination, was founded in 1839 in Toronto and offered established practices in energy, mining and banking.

The Best of the Biggest

Dentons has capitalized on the DNA of its parent firms, with its energy, insurance, real estate and banking and finance practices having emerged as its primary calling cards. It is now home to the largest energy, mining, and resources practice of any law firm, is building on Dentons' long-rooted Washington, DC presence handling transactional, litigation and regulatory matters for energy companies, and has the largest integrated global real estate practice worldwide. Its international client base brings together such diverse and powerful entities as the British government, the Royal Bank of Scotland and Qatar-based Arabic news outlet Al Jazeera.

Growing Up and Getting Noticed
Dentons celebrated the first anniversary of its combination with international law firm Salans LLP, Canadian law firm Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP and international law firm SNR Denton. Among the global media noting the milestone were Bloomberg News, Legal Bisnow, The Diplomat Bucharest, The Globe Advisor and the network of European Business Association Newsletters.

Expanding in Africa

Dentons joined with associate firm KapdiTwala to launch an office in Cape Town, South Africa and announced plans for new offices in Johannesburg and Francophone Africa later this year. The Cape Town office marked the first time a global law firm joined with a Level 1 Black Economic Empowerment law firm.

Prime Additions

Dentons strengthened a number of key practices and sectors with the addition of 46 lawyers from Canadian firm Heenan Blaikie, including the Right Honorable Jean Chrétien, the 20th Prime Minister of Canada. The collapse of Heenan Blaikie, the first such event in Canada, and the departure of its lawyers made headlines around the world.

September 2013

Sweet Sixteen
Dentons opened an office in Houston, its 16th office in the United States, to serve more than 400 existing clients in and around Houston. Dentons' expansion into the capital of American energy leverages the firm's extensive global energy network to help clients capture opportunities and adapt to evolving sectors, technologies and regulations.
