About Seyfarth Shaw LLP

Founded in 1945 by a trio of labor lawyers in Chicago, Seyfarth Shaw has grown to more than 900 lawyers across 14 offices in the U.S., London, Melbourne, Sydney and Shanghai. While it is highly regarded for its labor and employment practice, the full-service firm advises on a broad range of legal areas, including litigation, tax, immigration, corporate, real estate and employee benefits.

Wide-Ranging Expertise

Seyfarth's practice spans a variety of key areas, including workouts and bankruptcy, commercial litigation, securities litigation, construction, corporate, employee benefits, environmental, government contracts, intellectual property, real estate, trade secrets, trusts and estates, and-its specialty-labor and employment. Its clients range from Fortune 100 to midsize companies and include publicly traded and privately held companies, as well as various types of funds. Seyfarth clients hail from a variety of industries, including financial institutions, newspapers and other media, technology, hotels, health care organizations and airlines. And it would seem that the firm does a good job at it-Seyfarth has been recognized among in-house counsel as 'Best of the Best' for client service among the 2016 BTI Consulting Group's Brand Elite rankings, earning top marks in the "Tech-Savvy"; "Value Driver"; "Client Service Strategist"; and "Movers & Shakers" categories. The firm has also received top rankings from U.S. News-Best Lawyers 2017 edition of "Best Law Firms" and named "Labor and Employment Team of the Year" by Chambers USA in 2016. Financial Times awarded Seyfarth as "highly commended" in it Innovation in the Business of Law category for the program's success in fostering collaboration and generating new work.

For the ninth year in a row, Seyfarth received a perfect score in the 2016 Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Corporate Equity Index as well as being named the "Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality." The firm is renowned for its workplace excellence and as becoming a leader in legal diversity. Seyfarth has been named one of the Best Law Firms for Women by Working Mother Media and the National Association of Female Executives (NAFE) for six consecutive years. Seyfarth has the largest U.S. Labor & Employment practice in a full service firm, it is one of the top five largest Real Estate practices among the AmLaw 100, and boasts one of the nation's largest Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation practices.

Lean Law Firm

Seyfarth's aim at being client focused has led the firm to recognize that one of the biggest challenges facing the legal services market today is the need to develop a common definition of "value" between law firms and their clients. In an effort to practice what they preach, Seyfarth has become the only large law firm to build a distinctive client service model, called SeyfarthLean, that combines the core principles of Lean Six Sigma with robust technology, project management, process improvement and practical tools.

Customized Career Paths

As is fitting for a firm that isn't afraid to innovate, Seyfarth's promotion and development structure has moved away from the traditional lockstep model. As associates, attorneys are compensated and advanced based on their individual merits and at varying rates-which could be either faster or slower than with a class year model, depending on the circumstances. The firm's professional services group offers another alternative for attorneys by tailoring arrangements according to each attorney's legal skill level, their desired time commitment and overall total contribution aspirations.

May 2017

In May 2017, Seyfarth successfully secured a complete defense verdict in a FINRA arbitration seeking over $68 million for C.L. King & Associates, Inc., a full-service investment bank and self-clearing broker-dealer, in one of the largest and most complex FINRA arbitrations involving a clearing firm in recent years. The Seyfarth litigation team was comprised of attorneys from the Boston and Chicago offices.

Summertime, and the Livings Is Easy

May 2017 brings a new diversity initiative to the New York office Summer Fellowship Program. The Seyfarth/MetLife Fellowship is an opportunity for law students from diverse backgrounds to gain exposure to a wider-range of law firm and in-house corporate legal experience. The 10-week paid fellowship program provides a first-year law student with unique, first-hand experience working alongside lawyers at Seyfarth's firm and MetLife's Legal Affairs organization in New York City.

Panoramic Views

Seyfarth Shaw's flagship Chicago office moved to the Willis Tower with an office design that encompasses the blues of Lake Michigan and the city grays to complement the views from the 80th floor office space. The firm had an eye on improving efficiency and making the best use of the square footage, but most significantly it was all about improving the firm's existing culture of collaboration.

You Know What's Cool? Billions.

Seyfarth Shaw's L&E trial aces won a $3.014 billion verdict. Hewitt Packard Enterprise Corp. had sued database software maker Oracle Corp. in 2011 for breach of contracts. The computer giant relied on Seyfarth attorneys Camille Olson and Richard Lapp to demonstrate to the court the damage Oracle's decision caused to its business. The result-a whopping $3.014 Billion jury verdict victory for HP and earning Seyfarth's employment litigators a spot among Law360's 2016 Practice Groups of the Year.
