Vault Verdict

Seward & Kissel associates love their firm’s lean approach to staffing, which allows them to get in the trenches with partners from day one. While a laid-back culture and focus on work/life balance also earn high marks, associates say the lack of transparency from management can be frustrating and that market bonuses would be very welcome.

Associates at Seward & Kissel value the close relationships they have with partners--and it would seem that the partners feel the same way, given the firm’s emphasis on personality and fit during the interview process. However, you must first look good on paper before you get the chance to let your personality shine.

About the Firm

Founded in 1890, Seward & Kissel has grown into a major player in the financial world, serving such clients as investment funds and big banks. The firm maintains offices in New York City and Washington, DC.

Seward's Stewardship

Much of Seward & Kissel's present success is owed to late name partner George Seward. In 1953, Seward, a distant relative of President Lincoln's Secretary of State of the same name, joined the firm, then called Meyer, Kidder, Matz & Kissel. Originally a specialist in business litigation, Seward helped build the organization's network in the hedge fund, banking and investment industries. Seward worked at the firm as senior counsel past his own centennial, before passing away at the age of 101 in 2012.

Associate Reviews

info

  • “Most people at the firm are great to work with. When you are a junior, partners and senior associates are very willing to teach you. When you are more senior, the juniors seem eager to learn. The firm does a great job of recruiting students who are intelligent but humble. Generally, this is not a firm of big egos.”
  • “Everyone is extremely down to earth and makes you feel comfortable asking questions. Partners will take the time to explain something to you rather than just give you an assignment and expect you to figure it out.”
  • “Groups have occasional outings, whether only for internal purposes or for client development/networking purposes. Most of the daily interaction is unofficial and based on class year.”
  • “Lawyers socialize together frequently outside of work, both at formal events organized by the firm and at informal events organized by the associates. This helps foster a friendly work environment during office hours.”
