About Sedgwick LLP

From a small San Francisco insurance shop, Sedgwick has grown into an international litigation firm with a dozen offices in the U.S. and three locations abroad.

From California Insurance Practice to International Litigation Powerhouse

Sedgwick has its roots as Keith & Creede, a San Francisco workers compensation boutique founded in 1933. In the 1940s, the firm shifted its focus to insurance liability work. In the 1950s, it sharpened its litigation practice when it served as defense for Cutter Laboratories in lawsuits stemming from faulty polio vaccines. (The pharmaceutical firm, licensed by the government to produce polio vaccines, accidentally infected a portion of its vaccines with a live polio virus). In 1959, the firm adopted the name Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold, but shortened it to Sedgwick LLP in 2011.

Sedgwick's first branch office opened in 1979 in Los Angeles, but its expansion began in earnest in the 1980s, when it launched practices in New York (with a focus on fidelity law and pharmaceutical product liability litigation), Chicago and Orange County. During its decades-long growth spurt, the firm also erected outposts abroad in London and Paris, all the while adding new practice areas, including product liability, toxic tort, drug and medical device litigation, health care, environmental and intellectual property law.

More recently, the firm forayed into Southern territory, opening an Austin office with an eye on media, entertainment and sports clients and an office in Houston catering toward admiralty and insurance clients. In 2009 Sedgwick opened a Fort Lauderdale office, followed by practices in Seattle and Washington, DC in 2011.

Reinventing Sedgwick

Although Sedgwick still deals in insurance work (albeit the high-end, multimillion dollar kind), the firm has begun to recast itself as a litigation firm, devoting a major chunk of its practice to defending Fortune 500 companies in complex commercial litigation ranging from product liability to mass torts to environmental and intellectual property disputes. Funding Sedgwick's transformation into a litigation powerhouse are clients like Bristol-Myers Squibb, Genentech, Lockheed Martin, Shell Oil and Brown & Williamson Tobacco. The litigation department has also worked thousands of asbestos cases, heading asbestos-related lawsuit defense for oil companies, brewers, aircraft manufacturers and utility companies.
