About Novak Druce Connolly Bove + Quigg LLP

Editor's note: In February 2016, Posinelli hired the majority of Novak Druce's attorneys, including name partners Novak and Druce, effectively ending the firm's practice of law.

Houston-based "super" IP boutique Novak Druce is renowned for its expertise in patent law, to which clients ING DIRECT, Astra Zeneca, L'Oreal, Pfizer Inc., Johnson & Johnson and the Ford Motor Company will attest.

A Super Boutique

Novak Druce was born in 2004 when a group of partners, including name and current managing partner Gregory Novak, left now-dissolved DC IP firm Howrey. Despite its humble beginnings, the firm's growth was ambitious, with expansion to eight locations and nine offices in less than a decade. The firm's rapid development reflected founding partner Novak's desire to create an IP "super" boutique.

Alongside its increase in size, Novak Druce has steadily risen in prestige. The firm placed on the National Law Journal's "Midsize Hot List" in 2011 and 2012 and was named a "Go-To Firm" in Corporate Counsel's 2012 "Who Represents America's Biggest Companies" survey. Novak Druce garners particular acclaim for its patent and trademark law prowess; the firm has been singled out as a Top Patent Firm and Top Trademark Firm by IP Today since 2008, one of the top 25 firms in patent litigation by Corporate Counsel, a top 50 patent and trademark firm by IP Today and a top IP firm in Delaware by Chambers nine years in a row. Its accomplished lawyers have been named Florida Super Lawyers, Washington, DC Super Lawyers and Top IP Attorneys by H-Texas Magazine.

The Comings and Goings of Lawyers

Novak Druce owes its existence in its current form to a number of firms with which it has undergone multiple mergers and acquisitions. In late 2012, Novak Druce merged with Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz LLP, an IP firm in Wilmington, Delaware, facilitating the firm's expansion into Delaware and into Connolly Bove's industrial strength areas of pharmaceuticals, life sciences and chemicals. The merge also created Novak Druce's full name, Novak Druce Connolly Bove & Quigg. The merge was finalized in the beginning of January 13, when the firm announced that the end of 2012 also brought seven lawyers from Boston-based IP firm Rissman Hendricks & Oliverio to its doors, solidifying yet another expansion.

Lucky Number 7

The number seven curiously and repeatedly pops up when talking about Novak Druce. Not only is Novak Druce the 7th largest IP firm in the country; it became known as such by acquiring seven lawyers from Rissman Hendricks & Oliverio. As if that weren't enough, Novak Druce ranked 7th in total plaintiffs' cases in Corporate Counsel's 2012"Patent Litigation Survey."

Japan and Oxford

Novak Druce's influence reaches beyond national borders. Across the Pacific, the firm has a special Japanese Client Practice Group, which helps Japanese clients understand and navigate U.S. IP law. The Group's bilingual lawyers also handle patent prosecution, cross-licensing and litigation for these clients in both ITC and U.S. district courts.

Across the Atlantic, Novak Druce runs the Novak Druce Centre for Professional Service Firms through the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School. The Centre offers a Novak Druce Doctoral Scholarship to applicants for the Oxford DPhil degree in Management Studies who intend to conduct research into professional service firms.
