Your Career

Our summer associate program is the primary source of new legal talent and is essential to our long-term success.  Each year we invite the finest first- and second-year law students from the nation’s top law schools to spend all or a part of their summer with us. Your summer experience will provide you with a realistic preview of what it is like to practice at Norton Rose Fulbright. You will do real work for real clients.  We offer sophisticated work, world-class learning and development, and our lawyers are committed to teaching and mentoring.

We understand that making a lateral move is an important decision and provide lateral lawyers with the support to integrate quickly. 

We are deeply committed to developing our lawyers at every step of their career.  Our associates have access to substantive legal training sessions focused on enhancing their practice specific knowledge. In addition, we offer a robust professional skills curriculum designed and delivered by our in-house Learning and Development team. Our New Associates Academy and Year 1 development plan are offered to first year associates. New Associates Academy offers intensive training and networking opportunities, while our Year 1 development plan ensures that first year associates have the legal and professional skills that will set them up for success. Mid-level associates receive practical training sessions focused on negotiation skills, legal project management and business development skills. Senior associates participate in an intensive two-and-a-half day business development program with a pitch simulation. Our Learning and Development team also provides regular tailored training and coaching to associates in every office. These programs include topics such as presentation skills, time management, delegation, supervision and feedback.  Our Global Mobility program provides targeted opportunities for associates to be seconded to another office.

Diversity and Inclusion is a core value and business imperative at Norton Rose Fulbright.  We are using our global status to organize our diversity efforts internationally. 

  • Norton Rose Fulbright set global diversity and inclusion targets of 30% female partners and 30% female partners on all board and management committees globally by 2020.  To achieve our targets, we focus our efforts on retention, promotion and lateral recruiting; our career strategies program specifically developed to assist female associates in being promoted to partner is an example of this.
  • We have four affinity networks: Women in Norton Rose Fulbright, Minority Lawyers Network, Pride at Norton Rose Fulbright, and the Flex-ability Network.

We are committed to being good citizens of the communities in which we live and work. That’s why every year, we donate tens of thousands of hours to pro bono matters. We actively seek community partnerships to ensure that our lawyers are available to assist where they are needed most.

Our pro bono commitment amounts to millions of dollars in legal fees donated each year to help those who are unable to pay for services. We also provide assistance to nonprofit charitable organizations, community development projects and legal service programs for the poor.

We consider pro bono hours in our annual bonus program for associates and pay some costs associated with this work. As a part of our tradition of commitment to pro bono, we set expectations for pro bono recognition well above the American Bar Association’s recommendation.  We recently created the Leon Jaworski Award for Pro Bono Excellence.  This new award honors Leon Jaworski’s legacy of public service and pro bono work and will be given annually to an attorney or team demonstrating by example a commitment to pro bono service. A few of our recent pro bono highlights:

  • Public Counsel, the largest pro bono law firm in the nation, is honoring Norton Rose Fulbright as its recipient of the 2015 Public Counsel Pro Bono Award for the firm’s extraordinary commitment to justice. 
  • Multi-year award for large law firm category by the Harris County Bench Bar Pro Bono Awards Committee

We support a wide range of charities in each of our offices, with a focus on supporting disabled and disadvantaged children and adults; helping them to integrate into society and the business world.  Our 2015-2016 initiative supports the Special Olympics and we have a fund-raising goal of $250,000, which we will reach through numerous global and local activities.  Last year, our global initiative supported The National MS Society Through our participation in the, BP MS 150, with a global team of 150 people, we won numerous awards including Rookie Team of the Year, Second Highest Fundraising Average Per Rider, and Top 25 Fundraising Team.
