About Morgan Cole LLP

Morgan Cole is a midsized firm with six offices spread across the Thames Valley, the South West and Wales. The firm may be best known for its work in the insurance and public sectors, although it is also growing its private client and corporate practices.

Roots run deep

Morgan Cole was born out of the merger of Morgan Bruce and Cole & Cole in 1998. The tie-up brought together a major player in the Thames Valley with a Welsh outfit that dated back to 1876. A decade after the merger, the firm experienced a new growth spurt. Morgan Cole opened an office in Bristol in 2007 and, two years later, merged with the Bristol-based insurance boutique CIP Solicitors. The move was part of an insurance sector drive in which the firm also scooped up a 10-lawyer catastrophic injury team from Gloucester-based Tayntons.

Sector specialists

All along, insurance work has been one of the firm's core areas of practice. Morgan Cole's insurance team acts for companies such as AXA and NFU Mutual. In 2010, the firm signed up with FirstAssist Legal Protection, a specialist legal expenses insurer, to offer "after-the-event" (ATE) insurance to commercial clients to reduce the financial risks of litigation.

Morgan Cole is also recognised for its public sector practice and especially its work with educational institutions. The firm has relationships with a number of universities, including Cardiff and Vale University LHB. Among the firm's major clients is the Welsh Assembly; Morgan Cole was the first firm to serve as advisor to the legislature. The roster also includes Severn Power, the Department of Health and the Thames Valley Police Authority.

Health and social care is another key sector. The practice is predominantly based in Cardiff, with a strong commercial presence in the Thames Valley. On the commercial side, Morgan Cole's well-respected finance team has put it on legal panels of six banks. It also garners recognition in commercial litigation, health and safety, professional negligence, personal tax, intellectual property and social housing.

Build it up

In September 2011, Morgan Cole created a new multidisciplinary team to focus on matters related to construction, energy and property. The "built environment" team includes nine partners, and advises both private and public sector clients on a range of issues, including development and regeneration, energy and sustainability, infrastructure and utilities, land remediation, planning and procurement, social housing, project finance and dispute resolution.

Doctor Who's new home

In May 2011, Morgan Cole helped British Steel Pension Fund add a Welsh TV studio and digital media hub to its portfolio. British Steel purchased the Roath Lock Studios and planned Centre for Creative Industries in Porth Teigr, Cardiff, from Aviva Investors' igloo Regeneration Fund. Morgan Cole acted for igloo, owner of the 38-acre waterfront site where both properties are located. The Roath Lock Studios, which opened in September 2011, are let to the BBC who will use the new studios to produce programmes such as 'Casualty' and 'Upstairs Downstairs'. Construction of the media centre is expected to be completed before the end of 2012.

Serving South-West Wales

In July 2011, Morgan Cole was named as one of six partner firms to the South-West Wales Legal Consortium, which also includes 12 solicitors panels and 16 barristers panels. The consortium consists of 18 public authorities, two police authorities, a fire service authority, a national park authority and a university. The new multimillion-pound framework agreement addresses a broad range of legal services, from conveyancing, employment law and litigation, to environmental law and planning, social services and project finance.

Share and share alike

Morgan Cole has recently joined a raft other law firms that are looking to trim costs by sharing back-office services. In February 2011, Morgan Cole signed an agreement with Integreon, a Bristol-based onshore shared services centre, to run its law library and information service.
